Art and Design College has 1 national vocational training base for disabled people, 1 provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 provincial and ministerial scientific research platform and 3 university-level scientific research platforms. Design is now a first-level discipline and a key discipline in Tianjin. It has two master's degree programs, approved in 2003 design (academic) master's degree program, approved in 2009 design (professional) master's degree program. In 2024, the college will optimize and integrate various research directions, and add new research directions of cultural heritage inheritance and innovative design in the design major to meet the needs of national cultural construction. The original five research directions in the design field, namely industrial product design, toys and animation, fashion design, visual communication design, environmental design and public art, are condensed to form four new research directions, namely intelligent product and integrated innovation design, visual communication and digital media design, fashion design and smart wear, environmental design and public art, so as to make the advantages of the research direction more prominent. The characteristics are more distinctive and more epochal.
In 2023, the subject group of "Creative Design of Light Industrial Products" was approved as the characteristic subject group of service industry development in Tianjin colleges and universities, and played an active role in serving Tianjin's light industry chain. The college has 7 undergraduate majors, including fashion and clothing design, product design, visual communication design, environmental design, public art, animation and performance, each with its own characteristics. The college has nearly 100 faculty members, including 74 full-time teachers, 11 professors and 32 associate professors. There are 18 teachers with doctor degree and 17 teachers with overseas visiting experience. There are 3 discipline leading talents in Tianjin colleges and universities, 4 young backbone teachers in Tianjin, 1 "five-a-batch" talents in Tianjin propaganda and culture, and 2 famous teachers at provincial and ministerial level. There are 31 tutors for postgraduate students.
The college takes the construction of disciplines as its leading force, promotes the transformation of research results through scientific research, and actively serves the economic and cultural development of the region. Focusing on the strategies of coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, creative transformation and innovative development of outstanding traditional Chinese culture, rural revitalization, the construction of Tianjin as a "City of Design," the "one base and three zones," and the "Tianjin City" and "Binhai City" dual-city development pattern, the college has actively participated in the "Ten Action Programs" of Tianjin, with a focus on serving the light industry and cultural and creative industries, and continuously strengthening interdisciplinary integration and industrial-education integration.
The teachers of the college have completed 3 national projects, 4 projects of the Ministry of Education, dozens of other provincial and ministerial projects, and won 4 Tianjin Social Science Outstanding Achievement Awards. There are 9 scientific research teams, actively serving social development, and the funds received in the past five years have exceeded 10 million yuan. More than 100 intellectual property rights have been authorized, including 13 invention patents. The college designed the brand logo and agricultural product packaging of "Jinnong Boutique" for Tianjin Agricultural Committee, effectively improving the social visibility and influence of Tianjin agricultural brand "Jinnong Boutique" and enhancing the overall image of Tianjin agricultural brand. The college has a long-term cooperation with Tianjin Jinbao Musical Instrument Co., Ltd. to design and develop products, so that enterprises can increase profits of hundreds of millions of yuan.
Through the Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center, a provincial and ministerial scientific research platform, the College continues to carry out intangible cultural heritage into the campus, intangible cultural heritage into the community and other projects, and continues to promote the creative transformation and innovative development of excellent traditional Chinese culture.
The college has actively carried out academic exchanges, hosted the Tianjin Summit of China Innovative Design Conference 2019, Tianjin University of Science and Technology Branch of the 15th Annual Academic Conference of Tianjin Social Sciences (2019), hosted the Asian Design Forum in 2021, the National "Huaxia Clothes" Forum, and hosted the "Shangyi Lecture Hall" in 2022 and 2024. Actively participated in the "National Textile Intangible Cultural Heritage Conference", "Tianjin Fashion Week" and other activities, and achieved good social impact.
