Song Brocade Workshop Brings Intangible Cultural Heritage to Older Adults

On the morning of June 18, 2026, the TUST Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center held a Song brocade workshop at a nursing home in Hexi District, Tianjin. The activity was part of a cooperative project with the Hexi District Social Education Office on the transmission and development of traditional arts and intangible cultural heritage skills in home-based eldercare service centers. It also conveyed Dragon Boat Festival greetings to residents.

Song brocade practitioners Yuan Jing and Mou Yaran demonstrated Song brocade weaving, a national intangible cultural heritage practice, and guided residents in making cultural and creative handicrafts based on the textile tradition.

The instructors introduced the history, artistic features and cultural value of Song brocade. Known for its restrained colors, detailed patterns and fine weaving, Song brocade is an important Chinese silk tradition. Samples, explanations of patterns and discussion helped participants understand its aesthetics and craftsmanship.

During the hands-on session, the instructors and research center members helped residents select materials, combine patterns and complete Song brocade-themed crafts. Participants worked together and discussed their pieces throughout the session.

The program connected cultural heritage education with services for older adults. Brocade patterns, silk materials and handcrafting also prompted participants to recall traditional clothing, household objects and folk crafts.

The TUST Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center conducts research, transmission and innovative application work on traditional fine arts and craft practices. It promotes intangible cultural heritage in schools, communities and public cultural spaces. The Song Brocade at the Nursing Home program extended that public service work to an eldercare setting.
