On May 12, 2025, Professor Thomas BUCAILLE, Dean of L'Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués Mode Paris, led a delegation to visit our college. He was invited to deliver an academic lecture titled "How French Fashion Transforms with New Technologies" at the lecture hall of the Hexi Campus Library. The event was attended by the head of the university's International Exchange Office, all members of the college's leadership team, as well as faculty and student representatives.
This lecture marks the inaugural session of the 2025 "Shangyi Lecture Series and the 23rd Tianjin Social Sciences Popularization Week Thematic Lectures" hosted by the College of Art and Design. In his presentation, Professor Thomas BUCAILLE took the century-old French fashion industry system as a starting point, systematically outlining its developmental trajectory from the era of haute couture ateliers to the digital age. He shared insights on how 3D modeling technology has revolutionized traditional garment pattern-making techniques, demonstrating the digital workflow from flat design to three-dimensional garment construction through PowerPoint. By analyzing transformation cases of iconic brands such as Hermès and Dior, he elucidated how emerging technologies are reshaping design processes, production models, and consumption scenarios, emphasizing that the core competitiveness of French fashion lies in its ability to translate technological innovation into artistic expression. During the interactive Q&A session with faculty and student representatives, when addressing a faculty member's question about combating product homogenization in the apparel industry, he stressed that fashion education should strengthen its foundation in local culture, fostering parallel advancement of cultural DNA and technological innovation to facilitate the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern technological paradigms
.
After the lecture, the leadership team and faculty representatives of the College of Art and Design held discussions. Both sides introduced their respective educational approaches and disciplinary characteristics, engaged in extensive exchanges on models for international joint talent cultivation, and reached preliminary cooperation intentions. Following the meeting, Professor Thomas BUCAILLE and his delegation also visited the classrooms and experimental centers of the college.
