College of Art and Design

The College of Art and Design was founded in 1985, formerly known as the Packaging and Art Engineering Department of Tianjin Institute of Light Industry, renamed as the Industrial Art Engineering Department in 1987, and named as the College of Art and Design in 2002. Over the past forty years, the college has cultivated many excellent art and design talents and become an important force in regional art education.

The college has a perfect discipline system. Undergraduate education includes Product Design, Performance, Environmental design, Fashion and Accessory Design, Public Art, Animation, Visual Communication Design, and Visual Communication Design. There are seven majors in the program, including Performance, Environmental design, Fashion and Accessory Design, Public Art, Animation, and Visual Communication Design, covering the core areas of art and design. Among them, Fashion and Accessory Design is a national first-class undergraduate program construction point, and Product Design and Visual Communication Design are Tianjin first-class undergraduate program construction points. Graduate education has two master's degree authorization points: Design (academic) and Design (professional). Design was approved in 2003 and is now a key cultivation discipline in Tianjin, covering three directions: industrial design, visual communication and media design, and cultural heritage heritage and innovation design; the professional master's degree in design was approved in 2009, covering four fields: intelligent product and integrated innovation design, visual communication and digital media design, fashion design and smart wear, environmental design and public art.

Product Design

Duration: 4 years

Degree: Bachelor of Fine Arts

Introduction to the major:

Established in 1987, Product Design is one of the first batch of brand majors in Tianjin, one of the first batch of first-class undergraduate majors and one of the key construction majors since the “Tenth Five-Year Plan”. As the director unit of China Toys and Baby Products Association, the specialty is unique in China, and it is the only specialty with the qualification of postgraduate training for toys in China. Relying on the Tianjin Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the specialty has been funded by the “Central and Local Universities Laboratory Project of Characteristic Advantageous Disciplines” and “Central Support for Laboratory Construction Projects of Local Universities”, with remarkable teaching achievements, and was awarded the Second Prize of National Higher Education Teaching Achievements. It has won the second prize of national teaching achievements in higher education, and has been approved as national teaching materials of the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” of the Ministry of Education and the Excellent Teaching Materials Award of China Light Industry.

Faculty Strength:

The program has a reasonable structure and strong faculty. 13 full-time teachers, including 10 senior titles. 50% of the teachers have been awarded “discipline leader”, “young backbone innovation talents” by Tianjin universities. 77% of the teachers are tutors of master students. Teachers come from Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts and other well-known institutions, the team won the red dot supreme award, Germany IF award, European product design gold medal and other international awards, with dozens of patents (including a number of patents for invention), published more than 50 high-level academic papers, published more than 10 books.

Main Courses:

The curriculum of this major focuses on ability cultivation and quality development, including university-enterprise cooperation courses (e.g. product development and design, design methods and applications), project-based courses (e.g. art design and innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural and creative product design and marketing), research courses (e.g. integrated design, sustainable design), industry-oriented courses (e.g. transportation design, toy design and technology) and cross-disciplinary courses (e.g. human-machine engineering, service design), providing students with a comprehensive and systematic learning experience. Performance

Introduction to the major:

The major of Performance was founded in 2007. On the basis of teaching basic theory, knowledge and basic skills, the major focuses on the cultivation of students' practical ability and actively organizes students to participate in performance practice and competitions, and the students have won more than a hundred domestic and foreign awards in various competitions over the years. Up to now, hundreds of professionals of different levels have been trained for the national performance industry. It is a major of the school's “Excellent Talent Education and Cultivation Program”.

Teachers' strength:

There are 6 professional teachers, 1 associate professor, whose research direction involves fashion performance, fashion management, fashion communication and other directions, and 5 of them have master's degree.

Main Courses:

The curriculum system of this major is complete, focusing on the combination of fashion theory and practical training, the core courses mainly include Introduction to Costume Performance, Costume Performance, Physical Training, Dance Fundamentals, Film and Television Performance Fundamentals, Modeling Design Fundamentals and so on.

Environmental Design

Introduction to the program:

The Environmental Design Program was established in 1999, and has been enrolling master's degree students in the direction of environmental design since 2006. The program emphasizes the combination of art and technology, and through the systematic study of indoor and outdoor environmental design, it cultivates design talents with solid professional knowledge, skills and creative ability.

Faculty Strength:

The faculty of this program is strong, with 14 full-time teachers, of which 31% are doctoral degree holders, 7 professors and associate professors, and 5 master's degree supervisors. The team gathers outstanding talents such as “Tianjin Leading Talents in Disciplines”, “Tianjin Key Young Innovative Talents”, members of the Academic Committee of China Foreign City Planning, and representatives of the People's Congress of Tianjin and Binhai New Area.

Main Courses:

The courses include materials and technology, computer-aided design, indoor furniture design, environmental facilities design, residential space design, office space design, exhibition space display design, space lighting technology, basic garden design and landscape planning and design, which comprehensively cultivate the students' design and practical ability.

Fashion and Accessory Design

Introduction to the program:

Founded in 1985, Fashion and Accessory Design is one of the earliest comprehensive colleges and universities in China to offer fashion majors, with a profound history. It is now a national first-class undergraduate program construction site, an application-oriented program in the “13th Five-Year Plan” of Tianjin Municipality, and serves as the director unit of China Fashion Designers' Association and a unit of the Ministry of Education's apparel CAD certification examination. Over the past 40 years, the program has formed specialties in the fields of traditional costume inheritance, design innovation, functional apparel, digital and AI virtual apparel design, fashion communication, etc., and constructed a whole chain talent cultivation system of “design+technology+marketing”. Relying on the platforms of Tianjin Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Center and Wisdom Fashion Design Institute, and equipped with excellent teachers and advanced facilities, it has cultivated a large number of industry backbones for the society.

Faculty strength:

The program has a strong faculty, with multi-level talents such as the person in charge of national-level boutique online open courses, provincial and ministerial-level teaching masters, Tianjin discipline leaders, young backbone innovation talents, and provincial and ministerial-level excellent teachers. The teaching team includes high-level experts such as the director of China Fashion Designers Association, the director of China Fashion Color Association, the member of China Artists Association and the Top Ten Young Artists of Tianjin, etc. The academic background covers well-known institutions at home and abroad, and the teaching and scientific research strength is outstanding.

Main Courses:

The curriculum of this major is comprehensive and systematic, covering interpretation of fashion and popular culture, techniques of fashion rendering, history of Chinese and Western clothing, clothing design, structural design and craftsmanship, three-dimensional cutting, design of clothing accessories, digital clothing design, fashion design workshop, study of ethnic clothing and comprehensive innovative design, etc., focusing on the cultivation of students' professional skills and innovation ability.

Public Art

Duration: 4 years

Major Introduction:

Founded in 2002, Public Art was formerly known as Decorative Arts, and was renamed Public Art in 2012. Adhering to the concept of “art integrates science and technology, art serves life”, the program is based in Tianjin, radiates across the country, and is committed to cultivating high-level professionals. The program cultivates composite talents who are well-rounded in moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic development, with solid art theory foundation, skilled creative skills and keen social insight. Students master various forms of expression such as sculpture, mural painting, installation art, etc., integrate art and technology, and create works that are both aesthetic and functional. At the same time, focusing on social needs, students are trained in communication, collaboration and project management skills, so that they can meet the needs of public space, from city squares and parks to community streets, use art to enhance the quality of the environment, energize urban and rural construction and cultural dissemination, serve the public's spiritual and cultural life, and promote the development of the social and humanistic environment.

Faculty strength:

The program has a strong and structurally diverse faculty to provide solid support for teaching and talent cultivation. At present, it has 9 full-time teachers, of whom 25% are doctoral degree holders, 5 associate professors and 5 master's degree supervisors. Teachers graduated from Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, Nankai University, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, Japan's National Joetsu University of Education, South Korea's National Soon Chun University and other domestic and international well-known institutions, with a profound academic background, covering the fields of sculpture, painting, design, new media art and other fields, a comprehensive knowledge system, to help the students grow up to adapt to the needs of the times of the public art professionals.

Main Courses:

The major courses cover AI design expression techniques, environmental sculpture, basic ceramics, mural design, public space design, Chinese painting, printmaking, fiber art, introduction to public art, public art creation (flat decoration and three-dimensional modeling), and thematic design of public art, which comprehensively cultivate students' artistic creation and design ability.

Animation

Duration: 4 years

Degree: Bachelor of Fine Arts

Introduction of the major:

Founded in 2004, Animation is one of the first batch of animation majors in Tianjin, and in 2008, it built the Experimental Teaching Center jointly constructed by the central government and the local government, and in 2012, it was appraised as a brand major in Tianjin and became the director of Tianjin Animation Society. Relying on the advantages of regional development and industrial demand, the program has built practice teaching bases for undergraduates and postgraduates with the National Animation Industrial Park of Sino-Singapore Eco-city, Tianjin Television, Binhai Television and Good Transmission Painting, etc., which promotes resource sharing and serves teachers and students. The program has a school-enterprise teaching team and has set up 2D animation, 3D animation and film and television studios, gradually forming the characteristics and advantages of running a school that integrates cross-media, science, art and humanities.

Teachers' strength:

Teachers of this program graduated from Communication University of China, Tianjin University, Hubei Institute of Fine Arts, Shandong Academy of Arts and Crafts and other famous colleges and universities. There are 12 professional teachers, including 4 PhDs and 6 masters, with 83% of PhD and master's degrees, and 4 master's supervisors. 4 teachers have gone to the United States and the United Kingdom for further study.

Main Courses:

The main courses of this major include audio-visual language, script creation, character design, split-screen design, digital camera and editing, digital compositing and special effects, digital sound processing, original animation design, directing fundamentals and professional creation, which cultivate students' animation production and innovation ability.

Visual Communication Design

Duration: 4 years

Introduction of the program:

With a history of more than 30 years, Visual Communication Design is one of the first-class undergraduate majors in Tianjin and an applied major in the “13th Five-Year” Comprehensive Investment Plan. The program closely follows the needs of economic and social development, relies on three first-class courses in Tianjin, one municipal Civic and Political Excellence Course for the New Era and two national catechism resources, builds a shared curriculum system, and implements the “three-integration” schooling characteristics of art and technology, integration of industry and education, and teaching and research to serve the local community, and the “three-docking” characteristics of the curriculum docking with the industry, jobs and employment. “Three docking” talent cultivation mode. The program has a high-level and diversified teaching team, whose members graduated from Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and other famous colleges and universities, including professors, associate professors and doctoral lecturers, among which there are five master's degree supervisors. Among the team members, there are Tianjin Famous Teaching Teachers, backbone of university innovation team, famous teachers of Civics and Politics, and Tianjin Outstanding Young Teachers. In addition, the team has a visual culture construction and fashion popular communication studio, and has hired a number of enterprise mentors to participate in teaching practice.
